Recreational Soccer Coach of the Year

Steve Strong has been coaching recreational soccer for the last eight years. Steve’s coaching philosophy has always been fair play and teamwork, which he believes are two of the main ingredients to a successful team.  This philosophy has been proven by his many successful seasons.  Steve must be doing something right, as he has been coaching the same group of girls since they were 9 years old, and is constantly requested by the parents to return to coach the next season.  For the past 4 years, Steve has been involved with 2 separate teams in both outdoor and indoor soccer, and despite this commitment, he still has time to be a member of the Winakwa soccer committee.  Steve has in the past, been able to share his coaching knowledge by instructing at Winakwa’s coaching clinics, and following up with frequent visits to the soccer fields to see how these coaches are making out.  Steve is always willing to help out by either answering questions or aiding at practices, to ensure the kids involved get the best soccer experience possible.  His love of the game is shown in the way he coaches and every player lucky enough to have been coached by him has developed that same passion.

Congratulations STEVE!

**********Manitoba Attorney General’s Award **********

Winakwa is proud to have been involved in the Bonding and Bridging Windsor Park Project. The partnership of Winakwa CC, Frontenac School and the Renaissance Counseling Centre on a youth initiative that addressed the concerns of arson, vandalism and personal safety has resulted in being honoured with the Manitoba Attorney General’s Award for Safer Communities! The kids were the real heroes of the project and we thank them for their hard work and dedication! We hope that the three videos that were produced will have a future life in schools and youth drop-in programs.

**********Raymond Simard Award for Volunteerism! **********

We are proud to announce that a member of our community has received the Raymond Simard Award for Volunteerism! Ben Lee has spent many years volunteering at Winakwa, but most notable is his commitment to the Winakwa Redevelopment Project as volunteer project manager. With his expertise to guide us, we have made almost $400,000 of improvements in the past five years (and we have no intentions of stopping!). Ben was one of twenty volunteers from the St. Boniface/St.Vital area honoured with a beautiful plaque at a ceremony hosted by our member of parliament, Ray Simard. Congratulations, Ben. Keep up the good work
