NEWSLETTER FALL 2003
PRESIDENTS REPORT, Cindy Fox 254-1888I'm sure everyone, including myself, is not ready for this beautiful summer to come to an end, but it is time to wrap our heads around matters at hand, namely Fall Registration: September 3rd and 7th –Please don't miss it! The same programs will be offered as last year, with the exception of Craft Classes, as we must sadly wish a fond farewell to Nancy Szyszkowski, an extraordinary individual who devoted nine years to both craft classes and the very popular craft sale. Although no longer teaching classes out of the community centre, you just have to look around the neighborhood to see that her legacy lives on. I know there are many talented individuals in “the Parks,” and if anyone would like to try their hand at this temporarily vacant position, please give me a call. Another pillar of the community centre, who is retiring after eight years of dedicated service, is Kris McQueen. Kris hosted the pre-teen sock hops, complete with great themes and wonderful prizes from the very generous Windsor Video. She implemented the donation to Winnipeg Harvest as part of the admission fee, thus teaching the spirit of giving. Kris practiced what she preached, giving countless hours of her time and energy, even though he r own kids are all older. Although we are grateful that the sock hops will continue under the direction of Wendy Kathler, Kris McQueen will be missed. You may have noticed that the transition has taken place on the Board of Directors. We bid adieu to Kathy Coulombe, who kept our canteen stocked, to Evelyn Champagne, the sultry voice behind Hall Rentals, to Kelly Kathler, our multi-talented summer equipment manager, and to Lynne Anderson, who made sure we were all kept up to date with the Winakwa newsletter. Last, but not least, we say goodbye to Pat Krueger-but only as president. Pat's got Winakwa in her blood and will continue to provide her wit, wisdom and energy wherever needed. Pat did a phenomenal job as President and I am thankful to be able to depend on her continued guidance. At this time, all positions on the Board have been filled, and I look forward to a very pleasant and productive tenure as Winakwa CC president. Speaking of productive … what, may you ask, is happening with the new player's box and parking lot? Although we've had a few delays and setbacks, they are both to be completed this Fall (one season with a tent is enough!). Also, the Building Committee is looking forward to a very important meeting (with all levels of government) at the end of this month. We want to see the new gym become a reality and are working very hard to make it so. Thank you for your patience and assistance! Finally, hats off to this year's winner of the Bill Powell Award, Tara Gilkes. Tara epitomizes the meaning of the word “volunteer” and truly honours the spirit of the award. Tara has volunteered at Winakwa for many years and is the founder and administrator of the much-needed and highly popular Youth Drop-In program. Despite a young and growing family and a full-time job, Tara will be taking over as our new Hall Rentals person, as well as helping out with the Craft Sale as well as overseeing Drop-in as well as heading up the Ecole Howden Pre-school… (And that's only the stuff I know about!). Tara is an amazing example of the spirit of volunteerism and I hope people will remember her when they are considering whether they can spare a little time to volunteer. I promise you won't regret it!

DROP IN REPORT Tara: 237-4365 The Winakwa Summer Drop-In has had a great summer. With an average of 60 kids a day. A lot of new faces both with kids and staff. This summer the Drop-In has planned and organized many activities for youth. Some were grab bag, mini-Olympics, movies, dances, bingos, dinners, crafts , outings and more. The kids also did some fundraising. They conducted a car wash and bottle drive raising over $300.00 for the program. What a great job they did. As I am writing this the staff and 18 kids are on the annual camping trip to White lake. I am sure they are having a blast. A special thanks to the staff Mel, Rich, Ari, Karla, Mark, Amy for a great summer. The skate board ramps have been out all summer and have been used non-stop. ADULT SLOPITCH Paul: 255-4415 Writing this article capped off a very long and hot family fun day. Everyone in attendance managed to managed to survive record breaking temperatures to enjoy races, games, water sprinklers, freezies, popcorn, lollies, pop, chips, burgers, hot dogs, salads, prizes, stuffed animals, baseball bucks, candyball, Boston Pizza mascot and our very own – Tipsy the Clown (Guy Carriere, Brew Crew.) The two bicycle winners were: Kailey Melna, Brew Crew and Jordan Carriere, Hookers. Laura and the outstanding crew of volunteers pulled off another memorable slo-pitch event. Hats off to Scott Masterton of the A’s for his generosity. Not only did he supply the hot dogs and hamburgers from Rothesay but he also did a great job as Head Cook. We saw a much-improved response to our harvest food drive and we can only do better! We will have that opportunity during the Fall Tournament Weekend (Sept. 12, 13 & 14.) Friday is pizza night – a buck a slice. Teams are reminded pizzas can be pre-ordered. The season windup is Saturday, September 20th. Remember our new start time — Cocktails at 5:30, Dinner at 6:30. WINAKWA TABLE TENNIS Andy: 255-8595 There it goes! Another summer. And as with the changing of the leaves colour, so do our interests and activities. Winakwa is pleased to offer their third full season of table tennis. Winakwa Community Centre and the Manitoba Table Tennis Association (MTTA) have partnered to provide t he facility and resources to offer this program. The program provides the use of 5 Stiga Expert tables along with a number of racquet s and balls. The program is run by a certified Level 1 table tennis coach. The aim is three-fold. (1) Introduce new players to the sport. (2) To aid in the progression of those who already have had exposure. (3) To identify individuals who have the potential to move onto higher training levels with the MTTA. All the serious jargon aside, we strive for a fun atmosphere where the kids can improve their skills. As has been the practice in the past, we will stress the fundamentals of the sport, i.e..: proper grip, backhand and forehand strokes, proper service, etc. In the past, Winakwa had a separate registration for the fall (Sept. to Dec.) and winter (Jan. to May) session. This year, there will be a single registration in the fall that will cover the full year. We are looking at approximately 25 sessions at a cost of $65. A calendar of table tennis dates will be provided at the registration table. For further information please contact Andy at 255-8595 or email: andybachmann@shaw.ca

BASEBALL REPORT Phil Habeck As the old saying goes, “Talent will get you to first base, attitude will take you the rest of the way home.” Well, the Mosquito AA boys baseball team (10 and 11 year olds) obviously had a ton of both of these qualities this past summer as they became the first Winakwa baseball team in recent history to win a provincial title. Congratulations to all the players and a great big thanks to all the parents and family members who sacrificed a beautiful sunny month of July to this worthwhile endeavour. The players were: Mikey Jeanson, Stéphane Bilodeau, Trav Garrioch, Dillon Hockin, Marc-André Habeck, Scot t Trapp, Gilles Paquet, Ryan Schultz, Cam Morin, Sam Briscoe, Justin Buissé-Laroche, Jake Beatty (Southdale) and Brendon O’Donnell (Fort Garry.) A special “merci” to Gil Jeanson (Mr. Relax and Easy Does It) as well as Guy Bilodeau (Mr. Quiet Leadership) who made all this possible. Also, a thank you to Mr. Gord Steiss, Winakwa baseball convener, for all the support and hard work during this past season. Here’s to making it two titles in a row ... well, we’ll work on it next summer!
