WINAKWA COMMUNITY CENTRE 2005 SUMMER EDITION

SERVING NIAKWA PARK, SOUTH LAND PARK AND WINDSOR PARK

 NEWSLETTER

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Cindy : 254-1888

Recently, I was admiring a picture of the amazing Human Rights Museum planned for Winnipeg. Upon closer securitization, I saw the inscription proposed for the front entrance way. It was a quote from Ghandi, which read:

“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Many of you are (or have been) involved in the community centre in varying capacities over the years. You may be well

aware of our regular programs and activities and hopefully you have enjoyed many of them. Participation lends to a sense of community and a commitment to the welfare of our neighborhood. I would like to tell you of a community initiative, begun two years ago, of which we can be particularly proud.

In 2002, a community forum was hosted by Winakwa to discuss safety concerns. There seemed to be a perception that youth were not to be trusted. In light of the brutal assaults at Windsor Park Collegiate this April, it is easy to understand that line of thought. However, it is important to know that there are a lot of kids doing great things in our community! For example, as a follow up to the 2002 forum, a youth group was formed to discuss ideas for community safety. This project later joined up with Frontenac School and the Renaissance Counseling Centre, both of whom had been working on projects of their own. We partnered to form “Bonding and Bridging Windsor Park” which saw youths produce three videos on personal safety, arson and vandalism. These videos were presented in two different forums, where discussion was key to the objective of the program: opening communication among members of the community to work together to find solutions to community concerns. Thank you to all involved! We are pleased to have won the Manitoba Attorney General Safer Communities Award and we look forward to extending the good work.

Another positive outcome of this project is the creation of the Winakwa CC skate park. Youth had voiced their desire for a safe place of their own within the community where they could improve their skateboarding skills. We now have a skate park that we hope to expand over the years. But what's really amazing is that a group of kids, headed up by Matt Kathler,

have organized a new skateboarding program at Winakwa, complete with a kick-off day of events in June! Hats off to these teenagers for organizing and following through with a brand new program! We encourage other kids to follow their example and get involved! Please let us know if you have some great ideas for the community. By working together, perhaps we can make them happen!

 Winakwa Redevelopment Project Update

I'm sure you've noticed that the players' box is done and is a fine addition to our centre. We are currently in the midst of securing funding for a new, digital outdoor sign for Winakwa, which will be located at the entrance to our parking lot. Landscaping will also take place, using last year's funding from the Environmental Youth Corps grant. This is yet another way for youth to get involved, as the grant requires that kids assist in this project. So if there's anyone who's interested in showing off their green thumbs, please give me a call!

Conveners

Conveners are the driving force behind the programs. Their jobs are made easier with your patience and support. Thank you to all involved in getting the spring basketball program up and running. I'm sure you will join me in welcoming the safe but early arrival of Brooklyn Dupasquier, new daughter of our basketball convener, Kim, and her husband Denis. Congratulations!

We also welcome our new volleyball convener, Tania Sloan, who is taking over for Cathy Fisette. Cathy has done a great job for the past three years and I know she is happy to pass along her knowledge to her successor. Thank you, both!

I believe Michelle Bales is still looking for an energetic person to take on the position of softball convener. Michelle has graciously stayed on in the interim, but we hope this season will produce a replacement. Thank you, Michelle, for your continued hard work. It's very much appreciated!

SOCCER

Rob: 253-5877

With the summer soccer season upon us, I would like to thank all the members of Winakwa's soccer committee for their assistance in getting another season under way. Their help in setting up the teams, organizing equipment and running coaches' clinics was priceless. This was the first year since I've been involved with the program that we've had volunteers to coach every team in our Tyke, Mini and Smurf leagues, while only missing a few coaches in our older teams. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for making our job a lot easier this year. I hope we can all work together to help out these generous volunteers. We should make sure it is known we appreciate them taking time out of their busy lives to spend quality time with our children. Without these individuals we would not have the outstanding soccer program that we have at Winakwa.

This spring the soccer committee is planning on running a Soccer Jamboree for our younger programs. This day will be filled with soccer games, activities, face painting, hot dogs and drinks. We hope this day will also be an opportunity to make new friends and see what a fine community we live in. I hope we all have a good season and most importantly have fun. Remember when we cheer on our children and their opponents, keep the comments positive. After all, it's only a game.

 Have a great summer!

HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED JOINING THE WINAKWA BOARD OF DIRECTORS?

We currently have two positions available:

1. Treasurer: Bookkeeping/accounting knowledge preferred. Supervises our paid bookkeeper.

2. Summer Equipment: Purchases, organizes, distributes and retrieves all summer equipment.

If you would like to find out more about either of these positions, please phone Cindy at 254-1888.

BASKETBALL

Kim: 235-1246

We currently have 9 teams for Spring Basketball. We have 7 boys teams and 2 girls teams. The boys teams range from 10 year olds to 17 year olds. The girls teams are 9-10 and 11-12. We run 2 separate seasons; Fall/ Winter and Spring . Fall season starts in October and ends in March. Spring season starts in April and ends at the end of June. The league is open to boys and girls ages 6-17. We run a Small Ball program in the Fall for 6&7 year olds. This is a learning/developing program which uses a smaller ball and court. This is played 4 on 4 and the kids are given a basketball and replica NBA basketball jersey to keep.

For schedules, league standings or information about the league check out www.wmba.ca.

 ADULT SLO PITCH

Gerry: 255-0064

For those who are unaware that your executive has changed, here is an update for you.

President:        Gerry Dyck Coasters

V.President:    Mike Gagne Goodtimers

Secretary:       Helen Gagne Goodtimers

Treasurer:       Debra Degagne Pacers

Equipment:      Kelly Kathler Goodtimers

Beer guys:       Gilles Vincent Castaways

Duanne Wall Goodtimers

Brian Selmon Goodtimers

On behalf of the new league executive, we are happy to be representing all of you in the coming year. I would personally like to welcome all the new players to our Slo-Pitch league. It is a FUN league and we hope that you too will enjoy your experience this year and continue to play for years to come. The league rules require a minimum age of 25 for the females and 30 for the males. New players have been accepted on a first come first served basis and priority has been given to the female newcomers. I estimate that we are 10 women short this year and I challenge all of you to assist our league in recruiting more women for 2006 season. We have a corporate sponsor this year: CANAD INNS / Windsor Park. Please keep them in mind for your next family or teams events. 20th Anniversary Winakwa Slo-Pitch Apparel: We will be placing only one order this year — deadline JUNE 5th. The true cost will depend on your orders. We need at least 151 orders. Ask your captains to pass on other exciting news from the captains’ meeting in April! We may need a few members to step up in fall to fill a couple of spots on our executive. Please consider this as a way in which you can help this league remain vibrant.

Spring Tournament: June 3 ( pizza night), 4 & 5

I welcome comments, concerns and suggestions from any of the active ball players this year. As we start off the season with new players and new members on the league’s executive, we will be attempting to bring in a few additional ideas to the plate. See you at the Spring Tournament.

WINTER EQUIPMENT

Sherman: 253-9781

First, I would like to remind all goalies and coaches who have equipment to please return it to me so I can replace or repair as needed. Also, to all basketball and volleyball teams, a reminder to please return equipment to me when your season is finished. Thank you.

SOCK HOPS

Wendy: 257-5931

Sock hops have finished for this season. I'd like to take this time to thank all the volunteers, I couldn't have done it without you. I hope everyone had a great time!. Please look for the dates of the next sock hops in the fall newsletter.

Have a great summer and thanks again!

VOLLEYBALL

Cathy: 257-4858

Well another season has gone by with 5 proud teams wearing the Winakwa name. We had an 8 & 9 year old team, a 10 & 11 year old team, a 14 and under team, and two 16 and under teams. All teams played very well this year and we hope to see them all out again next year. We sure have some great athletes in our area!

Coaches/volunteers for this year were Richard Szymesko, Ron Sloan, Robert Lee, Lisa Anderson, Mark King, Carly Anderson, Lisa, Dominac Torchia and Matt Kathler. Matt is the youngest of our coaches, who had high regards from his peers. Thanks Matt and it is great that we have younger volunteers who can gain experience through community club sports. Thanks to all the parents who helped out during practices and games.

If you are interested in the growing sport of volleyball, whether it is playing or coaching, then please come and talk to us at the fall registration. Volleyball is a reasonably priced indoor sport where the practices range from one or two a week and the games are on the weekends.

I'm hanging up my convener hat, as I have put in three great years, and open the door for the next volunteer. I would like to welcome Tania Sloan to the role of volleyball convener and we all look forward to working with her. Tania brings along experience when it comes to volleyball and has a great spirit in promoting this great sport.

It has been a ball! (pun intended)

STAY & PLAY

Sandi: 255-5546

Spring has sprung, we have survived another Winnipeg winter and another season of Stay & Play is almost over. We have already enjoyed our Valentine and Easter parties as well as a “Mom's” night out at our spring Potluck dinner and we look forward to the hot (and dry) weatherbringing us to our year end wind ups.

Special and sincere “thanks” to the executive members, Dino and crew, and all those involved with Stay & Play whose efforts help to make our program run smoothly and that much more enjoyable. Your dedication is greatly appreciated.

A fond farewell to those who will not be returning next season and we look forward to seeing those of you who are back again in the fall along with any new faces in the community that would like to come and have fun. Have a wonderful, safe and happy summer!

TABLE TENNIS

Andy: 255-8595

TABLE TENNIS WRAPS UP SEASON

Mid May signals the end of yet another season of table tennis at Winakwa. The season was highlighted by the acquisition of 5 new tables, racquets and a training robot. All of the kids showed improvement, with a few entering the Manitoba Open Table Tennis Championships, held April 2nd and 3rd at the University of Manitoba. It was a good experience for all.

 LOOKING AHEAD

At the time of this article, the possibility of free drop-in play through the summer months had been discussed but not finalized. Anyone interested in playing casually through the summer may contact Andy at the number or e-mail provided below.

A program focusing on the fundamentals of table tennis will be offered in the fall and winter of 2005/06. The program is open to all ages and skill levels. If interested, sign-up will take place at the Winakwa's Fall Registration.

For any information regarding table tennis at Winakwa, please contact Andy ph. 255-8595 email andybachmann@shaw.ca

LET'S PLAY BALL!!

The weather is looking great for the coming season. It's hard to believe just a few weeks ago the fields were covered in snow. Registration is complete, players have been transferred in and out as required, resulting in Winakwa being home to 4 softball teams.

Practices have started and games will start the first week in May. The girls will be wearing our new uniforms this season. Come out to support our teams and see their new look. Hopefully the weather will remain pleasant so all players will have an enjoyable season.

As the start of the season approaches and all registration functions are completed, I will be stepping down as softball convener. To ensure the continuation of the softball program individuals are desperately needed on a softball committee. Please contact Winakwa CC president to volunteer.
